Why Stone Samples Matter Before Custom Fabrication

September 03, 2026

A small sample can prevent a big mistake.

When a stone is going to become a custom washbasin, table, wall panel, waterjet mosaic or architectural detail, choosing a material based on a screen image alone is rarely enough.

A physical sample lets you see what a photograph cannot fully communicate:

Color. Texture. Finish. Mineral character.

And for custom stonework, these details matter long before the first cut is made.

From Sample to Finished Piece

At Toras, we see samples as the first step of the fabrication process — not simply a small piece of stone sent for approval.

Once the material direction is clear, the sample can help us move into the next decisions:

Material → Finish → Design → Fabrication → Final Piece

For example, when developing a custom stone furniture piece, the sample helps establish the visual direction before we finalize the dimensions, edges and fabrication details.

For a waterjet mosaic, it can help confirm how different stones work together.

For a bathroom vanity or washbasin, it allows the client to evaluate the stone's tone and finish before the material becomes a functional piece.

Why Samples Are Especially Important for Natural Stone

Natural stone is not a printed product.

Two slabs of the same material can show differences in veining, tone, movement and mineral structure. Current industry specification guidance similarly recommends reviewing current samples and understanding the realistic visual range of the material rather than treating one small sample as an exact guarantee of an entire production lot.

That's why, for project work, we encourage clients to look at the sample as the starting reference — and then move toward slab photos, layout confirmation and production approval when the project requires it.

A Better Way to Start a Custom Stone Project

You don't need a finalized production drawing to talk to us.

You can start with:

  • A stone sample or material name
  • A reference image
  • A sketch
  • A project drawing
  • A desired finish
  • Approximate dimensions

From there, Toras can help evaluate the material direction and fabrication possibilities.

Have a stone sample you'd like to turn into a finished product?

Send us the sample details, drawing or even just an inspiration image.

Let's start from the material and work toward the finished piece.
